A morphological guide of neotropical freshwater sponge spicules for paleolimnological studies

چکیده

Freshwater sponges (Porifera: Spongillida) are sessile invertebrates with skeletons composed of siliceous elements termed spicules. Sponge spicules (megascleres, microscleres, and gemmuloscleres) characterized by widely varying sizes shapes. These well-preserved in lacustrine, wetland, riverine sediments hold significant ecological limnological information that can be applied as diagnostic tools reconstructions Quaternary environments. However, problems taxonomy the absence systematic guidelines standards identification represent major challenges to utilizing freshwater a paleo-proxy. Here, we present well-illustrated extraction protocol morphological guide Neotropical sponge fauna. This is intended introduce researchers students study their use tool paleoecology paleolimnology.

Freshwater sponge spicules: a new agent of ocular pathology.

In a recent outbreak of human ocular injuries that occurred in the town of Araguatins, at the right bank of Araguaia river, state of Tocantins, Brazil, along the low water period of 2005, two patients (8 and 12-year-old boys) presented inferior adherent leukoma in the left eye (OS), and peripherical uveites, with snowbanking in the inferior pars plana. The third one (13-year-old girl) showed po...

Carbonaceous preservation of Cambrian hexactinellid sponge spicules.

Early fossil sponges offer a direct window onto the evolutionary emergence of animals, but insights are limited by the paucity of characters preserved in the conventional fossil record. Here, a new preservational mode for sponge spicules is reported from the lower Cambrian Forteau Formation (Newfoundland, Canada), prompting a re-examination of proposed homologies and sponge inter-relationships....

A Millimeter Scale Flexural Testing System for Measuring the Mechanical Properties of Marine Sponge Spicules.

Many load bearing biological structures (LBBSs)-such as feather rachises and spicules-are small (<1 mm) but not microscopic. Measuring the flexural behavior of these LBBSs is important for understanding the origins of their remarkable mechanical functions. We describe a protocol for performing three-point bending tests using a custom-built mechanical testing device that can measure forces rangi...

Sponge cytogenetics - mitotic chromosomes of ten species of freshwater sponge.

Porifera (sponges) are the most basal phylum of extant metazoans. To gain insight into sponge genome construction, cytogenetic analysis was performed for ten freshwater sponge species of six genera, using conventional Giemsa staining, chromosome banding, and fluorescence in-situ hybridization. The karyotypes were very similar among the ten species, exhibiting a diploid chromosome number of 2n=4...
